Serious incident

On Sunday, October 25, 2026, Tatum Christensen, 16, of Audubon, Iowa, was thrown from a 1986 John Deere 4450 tractor and died at the scene when a northbound semi hit the back of the trailer the tractor was pulling on Highway 71 just south of Audubon, the Iowa State Patrol said, as reported by Radio Iowa and KCRG. The semi driver, Kenneth Mohr, 46, of Audubon, was seriously injured and flown to a hospital.

The same day in Audubon County, a pickup collided head-on with a John Deere combine on Falcon Avenue; the pickup went into the ditch and caught fire, its driver was taken to a hospital with serious injuries, and the combine driver was not hurt, Radio Iowa reported.

For farm equipment on public roads, the defenses to check are lighting, flashers, and a slow-moving vehicle emblem on the rear of the last wagon or trailer, a rollover protective structure and seat belt on the tractor, escort vehicles on busy highways, and route and timing choices that keep slow loads out of fast traffic. These are equipment and planning controls, not just the attention of the operator or other drivers.
