Serious incident

On Tuesday, October 27, 2026, a 24-year-old construction worker was killed at a construction site behind Sonrise Christian Church, just west of Iron Springs Road west of Cedar City in Iron County, Utah. Deputies were called at about 10:29 a.m. According to Iron County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Cassie Meredith, he was bent down greasing the bucket of an excavator when a pickup-style dump truck operated by another employee of the same company backed into him, KUTV and St. George News reported.

A medical helicopter was canceled. The sheriff’s office said the circumstances remain under investigation, that it appears to be a tragic accident, and that no charges have been filed. The worker’s name has not been released. The Utah Highway Patrol and Cedar City Fire also responded.

For any site where equipment is serviced while trucks are moving, the defenses to check are a designated service area away from haul routes, a backing plan with working backup alarms and spotters, a rule that drivers are told when someone is working on the ground nearby, and barricades or parked equipment that keep backing vehicles out of the space. These are site layout and planning controls, not just driver or worker attention.
