Serious incident

Just before 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 31, 2026, a fire broke out at a two-story home in the 200 block of Virginia Avenue in Pittsburgh’s Mount Washington neighborhood, WTAE and WPXI reported. Firefighters found heavy smoke and flames coming from the back of second-floor apartments.

Two firefighters were taken to hospitals, one for trouble breathing and one for a shoulder injury, the reports said. All occupants were evacuated, and the Red Cross is assisting those displaced. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Pittsburgh Fire Investigation Unit.

For any department, the defenses to check are SCBA checks at the start of every shift, air management with a planned exit before the low-air alarm, crews staying together, and rehab and medical monitoring after hard work. These are system defenses, not a judgment about the firefighters involved, and the reports did not say what caused either injury.
