Serious incident

Shortly after 1 p.m. on Sunday, November 1, 2026, Danbury, Connecticut, emergency responders were called to a fire at an apartment complex on Kohanza Street and were told two occupants might be trapped on the second floor, WFSB and NBC Connecticut reported. A Danbury volunteer firefighter who had driven by and seen smoke broke a window and tried to reach the victim but could not get in because of heavy smoke.

Arriving crews entered the second-floor apartment through a window, found one unconscious person, and removed them by ladder; the person was pronounced dead at the scene, as was a dog. Three firefighters suffered minor burns and were taken to the hospital, and their conditions were not released. The cause and origin of the fire are under investigation.

For any department, the defenses to check are size-up before entry, door control during search and vent-enter-search, crews that stay together and in contact, and air management with a planned way out. These are system defenses, not a judgment about the firefighters involved, and the reports did not say how the burns happened.
