On Wednesday morning, October 14, 2026, an outside contractor was found dead in a behind-the-scenes area of The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens in Palm Desert, California, after what the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office described as an industrial accident, as reported by KESQ News Channel 3 and NBC Palm Springs.
Deputies were sent at 9:05 a.m. to the 47000 block of Portola Avenue and met paramedics, who had already pronounced the person dead at the scene. The sheriff’s office said there were no signs of foul play and the investigation is ongoing. The zoo said the incident did not involve guests and was unrelated to its animals, animal care operations, or the Lions Ridge development project. The contractor’s name, the employer, the work being done, and how the person died had not been released.
The cause is not known, so this is not a lesson about one hazard. It is a reminder for any site that hosts outside contractors in back-of-house areas: the host and the contractor should agree before work starts on what the job is, which hazards and equipment are in that area, who checks on the contractor and how often, and how anyone would call for help. Someone working where others rarely pass needs a check-in plan, so a problem is found in minutes, not later.
