Serious incident

On Monday afternoon, October 5, 2026, shortly after 3 p.m., Cleiton Santana da Silva, 41, was crushed by a container while the Liberian-flagged ship MSC Albany was being loaded at the Port of Navegantes in Santa Catarina, Brazil, according to police and port operator Portonave as reported by g1 and NSC Total.

Police delegate Ícaro Malveira told g1 that the worker was wearing personal protective equipment and was manually locking the pins that hold containers in place for the voyage when he was crushed. Initial police findings reported by Jornal da Manhã said he was in the container bay, considered a restricted-access area. NSC Total reported, citing information Portonave gave the Military Police, that he had gone to check a problem with a container lock while a crane was moving another container into the hold.

Portonave’s rescue team and SAMU paramedics boarded the ship and confirmed his death. Portonave said it has opened an internal investigation and notified authorities, and the Civil Police opened an inquiry into the cause.

For lashing gangs and deck crews: tell the signaler before you go after a stuck twistlock or cone, wait until the crane has stopped and the operator acknowledges, and never work in the bay or under a box while a load is moving.
