Serious incident

On Tuesday, October 20, 2026, a worker died in an accident at the facilities of Bergé, a cargo-handling and logistics company operating at the Port of Bilbao, Spain, WorldCargo News reported. The Basque regional police received an alert shortly after 3 p.m. but did not release details, and emergency medical personnel could not save the worker.

Osalan, the Basque Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, is investigating the circumstances. Trade unions at the port said they would organize protests and called for an investigation, describing the port as a high-risk environment because of the machinery and materials used.

This is a non-U.S. incident shown because no verified serious U.S. maritime worker incident was found in the past 14 days. For cargo handling at any terminal, the defenses to check are separation of people on foot from moving machinery and suspended loads, inspected handling gear, fall protection on stacks and vessels, and a clear plan for who controls each lift and move. These are planning and equipment controls, not just individual care.
