On Tuesday, October 6, 2026, two people were killed when an oilfield pipeline exploded and caught fire in the Eunice area of Lea County, New Mexico, according to the Lea County Sheriff’s Office as reported by KRQE, KOAT, and First Alert 7 (KOSA).
Deputies were dispatched at about 1:04 p.m. to an industrial accident involving a fire on a pipeline in the oil field near U.S. Highway 176 and Bootleg Road, and found two people dead at the scene. Lea County had earlier said the explosion was near Paduca Breaks and Alisha Lane. The Eunice and Jal fire departments, the sheriff’s office, and Lea County Emergency Management responded; officials said the fire was contained, no evacuations were needed, and no structures were damaged.
As of the afternoon of October 7, the sheriff’s office had not released the names of the two people who died, and the reports we found did not name the pipeline operator or employer or give a cause. The sheriff’s office called it an isolated incident with no ongoing threat to the public and said the investigation continues.
For oil and gas and pipeline crews: know the emergency isolation points and muster route for every line on your lease before work starts, keep everyone upwind and well back from a release or fire, and stop work and call it in at the first sign of a leak, odor, or pressure anomaly.
