On the evening of Monday, September 28, 2026, California Highway Patrol Officer Brian Liles, 44, was killed in the line of duty near Tipton, California, after his department-issued motorcycle collided with a truck-tractor on State Route 99. Another passing vehicle then struck the officer after the initial impact. Emergency crews attempted lifesaving measures, but Liles died at the scene.
CHP said the on-duty crash happened at about 5:11 p.m. on State Route 99, just north of State Route 190 in Tipton; FreightWaves reported the collision was south of Avenue 152. Liles was a 16-year CHP veteran who had joined Visalia’s first group of motorcycle officers in December 2025 after specialized training. Authorities had not publicly released additional circumstances explaining what led to the impact, and the truck driver/carrier details were not identified in early reporting.
Gov. Gavin Newsom called the death a heartbreaking loss. Flags at the Capitol were lowered to half-staff. The CHP 11-99 Foundation announced emergency and death benefits for his wife. CHP held a Bell Toll Tribute at the academy in West Sacramento. Liles leaves behind his wife, two children, parents, and two sisters. Reporting noted he was CHP’s first line-of-duty death since 2020.
For patrol crews, high-speed freight corridors combine motorcycle vulnerability with heavy commercial traffic. Maximize conspicuity, manage space around trucks, belt in on every four-wheel move, and treat every shoulder stop as a struck-by scene.
