Serious incident

At about 1 a.m. on Saturday, October 10, 2026, Philadelphia Police Officer Shane Seiber, 40, a 10-year veteran, was shot and killed and a 33-year-old officer was seriously wounded on the 100 block of North 52nd Street in West Philadelphia, according to Philadelphia police and the district attorney as reported by CBS News Philadelphia.

Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel said officers received a call about a man with a gun on the porch of a home and came under heavy gunfire as they approached. Seiber was shot three times and his partner was shot 12 times; the district attorney said the gunman also fired at nine other officers, who were not struck. A 35-year-old man was arrested and charged with homicide of a law enforcement officer and other offenses.

For police agencies, the defenses this points to are getting and sharing caller information before arrival, staging and approaching from cover with backup on reported-gun calls, body armor and trauma kits on every officer, and a plan to rescue and treat a wounded officer quickly.
