Serious incident

Late Tuesday, October 20, 2026, Van Zandt County, Texas, sheriff’s deputy Adam Sherifi was shot and killed and Canton Police Officer Christopher Watson was wounded during a warrant service in the 4300 block of State Highway 198 south of Canton, KLTV and NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth reported.

Sheriff Kevin Bridger said deputies were helping Canton police serve felony warrants for aggravated assault and aggravated assault on a peace officer. Around 10:22 p.m., shots were fired from inside the home toward deputies and officers outside, and law enforcement returned fire. The suspect was found dead inside the home. A county judge said Watson was in danger of losing an arm. The Texas Rangers are investigating.

For high-risk warrant service, the defenses to check are the information gathered on the subject before the service, the written plan and staffing, the cover available to officers outside, medical readiness, and when the plan calls for a tactical team. These are planning and organizational controls, not just individual officer actions.
