Serious incident

On Saturday, October 24, 2026, Logan County (West Virginia) Sheriff’s Deputy Caden R. Mullins, 24, was killed when his cruiser collided with a coal truck at Route 10 and Rum Creek Road, between Dabney and Lyburn, WCHS and WSAZ reported. The sheriff’s office said he was on duty; a passenger in the cruiser was airlifted to a hospital in Charleston.

West Virginia State Police are leading the investigation, and the cause of the crash has not been released. Mullins began his career with the Charleston Police Department and joined the Logan County Sheriff’s Office in August 2025; his brother is also a Logan County deputy.

For patrol driving on roads shared with heavy trucks, the defenses to check are driver training on intersections and large-vehicle behavior, seat belt use on every drive, fatigue management, and review of crash-prone intersections with road agencies. These are training, policy, and road-design controls, not just individual driving skill.
